makings of a super CooL cat...Needle felted by Nicole Slater

The exploration of needle felting animals. Here I am showing starting out with a pipe cleaner form of the cat. I do this so that the cats legs can move and also to reinforce the cats ability to stand up. Once the frame is complete I begin placing wool around the frame and tacking it into place with the felting needle.

Once I have the cat completely covered and the basic shape looks correct....I then begin to pick out colors of wool. This time I used Alpaca. I found it more difficult to work with the Alpaca because of the ultra softness...it just didn't seem to tack as easy(twice the work!)

I use a photo to refer to and find it a bit frustrating because I can't just tell the cat to flip on it's side..LOL!! (or) check the color behind it's ear....usually the client give a few pictures and not all the information is there so....sometime I have to just guess if they don't have the pet or not enough photos.

The outcome is so worth the hard work! I love seeing the photos of the new owners enjoyment...Pretty Cool!!!

the "Artists Loft was full of CreaTive EneRgy today!

Reverse painted glass ornament workshop....9 fun fantastic ladies!

We had a Birthday girl in the house...no candles....NO PROBLEM! Use a paintbrush and you are good to GO!!!!

We had a wonderful time discovering new ideas, textures and setting out to find our limits:)

Art is so fun because you play until you drop...and that is exactly what we did.
We painted a "sampler plate" which was so fun. The idea was to test colors, patterns, textures and layers all over on the reverse side of a plate and then....create our ornaments.

We discovered the sampler plates ROCKED!.....each one one so fun and unique....

When you just play in paint, without a plan.... sometimes... the best things B E C O M E.

I took away from this a full heart, an excited group of gals ready to learn and create and some fabulous works of art!

-Cheers

Needle Felting is portable...kind-of?!

SOMETIMES YOU JUST "have to" CREATE.... IN THE WEIRDEST PLACES!

It is funny how MOST people would look at this and say...."That is such a random place to start creating." I have discovered...an artist will work anyplace, anywhere, anytime! I love that... I went to visit my husband at work...he wasn't there...so I just took over his desk:) You should have seen a the fur balls fly...really there was wooly fuzz EVERYWHERE!

This is my cute kitty. I make them to order and can make your pet too! Just send me a photograph with paws, tail, body etc....I also make them with an armature inside so the legs can bend!

My Wooly-Guys were a hit at my last show so....creating more family members as we speak. lol!

Every show I tell myself I am going to be completely prepared and somehow...even when I think I am so ready....I'm NOT! There is no cure for this. I just have to remember: I have these magical friends that appear to lend a helping hand. I am so lucky to have such a wonderful support group! My friend Bill Harris took these photos and glad he did....I really like to step back after a crazy world-wind show and look back and reflect on the it.

The moral to the story is this.....
I have learned so much about myself and how to make a living doing what I love,,,A R T !
It is a passion, a lifestyle, and a sure joy!
I have moments of frustration but, when it comes to the show or end of day I am filled with a sense of accomplishment, a new understanding of how I deal under-pressure and acknowledgement of who my friends are and how much they mean to me....I am lifted by each and everyone:) THANK YOU

Oils Beginners List

Nicole Slater Studio

Oils Beginners List:

In the beginning of you're painting journey you will find it a bit overwhelming with all of the paint brands, quality, colors, brushes, styles, canvas materials and so on.Believe me I get the frustrationI have been there and always never know it all!

PaInT
I would suggest starting with:
Better Qualitypaint such as Rembrandt, Grumbacher, Gamblin& Windsor Newtonbrands. The reason why I strongly suggest with better quality paint in the beginning is: I have found it lessens the frustration of making less quality paints look or work well.It is just not worth your time invested or talent to waste on products that dont working your favor.

With all that said: I use the Grumbacherbrand but also told Rembrandtor Windsor newtonbrands are great too!
A Starter Set:
Usually has 7-9 of the basics needed: Titanium White, Ivory Black, Cad Yellow Medium Hue, Cadmium Orange, Red Medium, Alizarin Crimson, Phthalo Green, Phthalo Blue, Dioxazine Purple, and Burnt Sienna……If set does not have all of thesesimply, fill in the gaps individually and you are on your way to an EXCELLENT START!

BrUshEs
OK, Now on to your brushes!
This is such an individual choice, however in the beginning I can get you started in the basics, but you will find yourself buying a multitude of brushes to fit your individual style, need, work size and comfort.

I myself like working with a long handled Bristleor Mongoosehair brush, because I work far away from my canvas, but if you are doing small intricate detail work and are sitting up-close you may want a short handled brush. Either way. Most are available in both long and short handles.

Once you have chosen the handle length we need to talk about the actual brush (head) There are Filbertsthey have a slight round shape to the top and are very practical to use because they can be angled to your preference to make both thick and thin lines. The Flatsare just that.Long and flat. I like using these for laying in big pieces of color or making bold, whimsy brushstrokes. The Brightsare like a flat onlyshorter, less flexible bristles and are great for blending colors for this reason. The rounds are great for sketching-in, lines, and detail work.

Besides, the head shapes there are the actual type of bristle or hairused to make the heads on the brush: I recommend a a filbert bristle in a variety of sizesthey can be used in all sorts of ways and a good Mongoose haired brush is always nice!

Here is a list of go-ToBrushes:
Flats: #2, 4, 8
Rounds: #2 #6
Filberts: #2 #6 #8 and #12
Bright: #8, #20

Extras:
Script/Liner: #0
Mopor Washin 3/4
Angular#6

CaNvAs

I paint fairly large but, in the beginning painting small may seem less overwhelming because there is less territoryto cover and also means less expensive (less paint to use) But, as with all art and suppliesdo what makes YOU HaPpY!  There are so many sub-straits now days, that you can buy already made such as: pre-stretched canvas, canvas boards gesso boards, primed wood, and so much more!

I would recommend starting with a pre-stretched and pre-primed canvas. The usual type is cover in a cotton duck canvas. It is less expensive than Linen Canvas, but Linen canvas is I feel best. If available in triple pre-primed get it! I also enjoy what they call Gallery Wrappedit is usual deeper 1to 3in the profile and is canvas wrapped nicely on the sides soyou do not need to frame. You can just paint the sides.

If you want to frame your work then a more traditional canvas to purchase would have a profile much smaller such as 7/8

Recommended starting canvas sizes : 8x10, 9x12, 11x14, 12 x16, 12x1216x20, 18x24, 20x24

OtheR SupPlieS and (Extras):

Paint Mediums such as:
Walnut Oil
Final Varnish not applied in class or home until painting complete dry 4-6 months

ESsEnTial “TooLs” NeEdeD

Easel, Apron, Masking tape, Pencil or charcoal, White mans t-shirt cut-up into rags, Viva brand paper towels(best), q-tips, small mirror, magazine picture or photos to paint

Goal is: to have a BlasT!
****If you dont have something dont worry we can make do and in-time you will fill in the gaps.
***Let me know if there is something I can help supply, until you can get your own.
